The Digital SAT is Coming! College Board has announced a new digital SAT which will be offered in the U.S. beginning with the March 2024 SAT. An October 2023 digital PSAT will also be offered.
WHO?
This new digital SAT will impact the Class of 2025 and beyond. Students in the Class of 2024 will not be impacted and should plan to take the current pencil and paper exam.
SAT Dates | Student Test Takers | SAT Type |
August 2023 | Class of 2024 & 2025 | Pencil and paper SAT ONLY |
September – December 2023 | Class of 2024 & 2025 | Pencil and paper SAT ONLY Digital PSAT (Class of 2025) |
March 2024 & beyond | Class of 2025 & beyond | Digital SAT ONLY |
WHAT?
A new digital SAT that is shorter (2 hours and 14 minutes), computer-based, and section adaptive. The digital SAT will be more secure than its predecessors, and students will receive their scores in a matter of days, rather than weeks.
There are two sections on the digital SAT: Math and Reading/Writing. Each section contains two modules. How a student performs on the first module will determine which second module they then get: the ‘easier’ or ‘more difficult’ module.
WHERE?
The digital SAT will continue to take place at school or a testing center on select Saturdays.
WHEN?
The first digital SAT will be administered in March 2024 – so students in the Class of 2025 will be able to take the digital SAT in the second half of their Junior year. (Note: Students in the Class of 2025 can STILL take the pencil and paper exam through Dec. 2, 2023. The last pencil and paper SAT will be administered on December 2, 2023.)
The first digital PSAT will be administered in schools in October 2023.
HOW?
Students will download the College Board “Bluebook” app to their device. Students can use their school-managed Chromebook or a personal PC or Mac or iPad. Review technological specifications here.
